How to choose car rims?

Table of Contents

Rims come in a variety of designs - from sporty to elegant to classic looks. They are primarily distinguished between the following two types:

  • Steel rims
  • Alloy rims

In addition to the materials, you'll encounter various technical terms like tire size, offset, and bolt pattern during your search. This guide provides more information on how to find the exact fitting rim for your car online with us.

Which Rims Fit?

Of course, the rim size and the permissible tire size in inches play an important role. However, from a technical perspective, the following aspects are also crucial:

  • Bolt Pattern: The bolt pattern indicates how many bolts secure the steel or alloy rims to the wheel hub. The diameter is also important to ensure they fit and stay secure while driving.
  • Offset: This specification describes the distance between the rim's mounting surface and the centerline of the rim. The value can be positive, negative, or zero. It's important in relation to the track width, as the rim should not protrude beyond the fender.
  • Size in inches: Typically, various rim sizes with corresponding tires are allowed for your car. It is important that all regulations and technical requirements are met to maintain the general operating permit (ABE).

There are other important criteria to consider. In the last section, you will learn how to simplify your search using our rim configurator and make a safe choice.

Do My Old Rims Fit on My New Car?

Whether paired with summer tires, winter tires, or all-season tires, you can find relevant information in the corresponding vehicle registration document. Details about the approved rims can be found under sections 15.1 to 15.3, represented by a combination of numbers and letters. These refer to the following criteria:

  • Width and outer diameter in inches (e.g., 8 x 19)
  • Offset (specified in mm). The smaller the value, the further the rim moves outward.
  • Information on the bolt pattern, as described above, including the number of holes and the diameter (e.g., 5 x 100)

This Is clearly explained:

By the way, it's also possible to change the rim and tire size different from the specifications in the vehicle registration document to specifically influence the vehicle's style. Information on the permitted size can be found in the EU Certificate of Conformity, also known as the COC paper. This serves as proof of compliance with all applicable regulations within the EU by the manufacturer.

What Are "Original Rims"?

Therefore, if you want to avoid the hassle of dealing with rim issues due to damage, original rims are the right choice. The mandatory ABE remains valid without the need for you to visit the TÜV or a similar organization in your area.

Difference Between Alloy and Steel Rims

With suitable alloy rims, you can enhance the appearance of your car. Unlike steel rims, they are mainly used in combination with summer tires. However, the situation changes when you switch to winter tires in the colder season. Below, we have summarized the main differences for you:

Aluminiumfelge
  • Alloy Rims: These are significantly lighter, which can positively affect driving behavior. They come in attractive looks to match your vehicle. Often, the number of spokes and the surface style are the main focus in the selection process.

Stahlfelge
  • Steel rims:They are extremely durable against external impacts, such as hitting a curb. Additionally, they are better suited for winter weather conditions. They are a very good choice in terms of price and reliability. The appearance can at least be enhanced with suitable hubcaps.

Tip for Alloy Rims: If you want to use them in winter, the so-called high-gloss polishing is an important consideration. This process refines the surface, making it more resistant to typical winter weather conditions.

Are Used Rims Recommended?

You often find offers for used aluminum rims from official dealers and private sellers online. The appealing factor is often the lower price compared to new rims. However, there is a risk that these rims may be (invisibly) damaged. This includes fine hairline cracks that may only become apparent later. Additionally, private sales do not include any warranty or guarantee. It is recommended to always buy rims and tires new.

How Do I Find the Right Rims Here in the Shop?

In addition to the information in the vehicle registration document, we are happy to assist you in finding rims that fit your car and include a general operating permit. Use the ReifenDirekt rim configurator to proceed step-by-step in the following order:

  1. Select the vehicle manufacturer
  2. Select the model you are currently driving
  3. Select the year of manufacture and type
  4. Specify the series and version of the model

You will then receive a selection of rims in various sizes and designs that fit your car. Another option is to enter the HSN (manufacturer key number) and TSN (type key number) in the designated fields. Both can be found in the registration certificate part 1 under positions 2.1 and 2.2 for all vehicles registered after 2005.
